An Xbox Series S for a Ramel to share with his mentee's

Posted Dec 9, 2024
Being a peer advocate is hard work! Especially when caring for your healing and supporting young people's recovery. This line of work requires access to outlets that promote self-care, normalcy, and human connection. Ramel operates a peer mentoring program for 'at-risk' youth throughout NYC. This year, he has mentored over 83 young people and helped more than half of those young people with concrete goal attainment, such as housing, employment, and educational support. Most of the youth mentored love to play video games but do not have access to gaming systems at home due to societal constructs of poverty. Ramel's wish is not for himself but selflessly for the youth he mentors. His holiday wish is for an Xbox gaming system at the family center where he operates his mentoring services. Ramel can use the gaming equipment to deepen his engagement with youth, especially those who struggle with vulnerability, comfort, and self-expression. When youth actively engage in an activity that reduces stress and increases comfort, they are more likely to absorb the mentoring supports and perspectives.

Ramel is 27 years old and lives in NY

Ramel 's gentle and generous demeanor is felt by all who share space with him. Ramel is a foster care alum and college graduate whose life purpose has unfolded over the past couple of years, serving as a youth advocate! Through his lived and educational expertise, Ramel leads peer mentoring programming in NYC for youth who have been impacted by systems and services. So far this year, Ramel has helped secure independent living apartment placements for 9 young people who were unhoused when they met Ramel. His compassionate care creates strong mentoring relationships with all of the youth he supports. When Ramel is not mentoring and advocating for foster care reforms, he is a huge sports fan who has loved to play and watch since he was a young kid.
