Joshua is an 8th grader who often feels out of place as he watches his friends connect with each other through their phones. They text to make plans, share funny pictures, and engage in light-hearted conversations—experiences that should be a normal part of being a teenager. After spending four challenging years in foster care, Joshua longs for this sense of belonging. His life hasn’t followed the typical path, and he really wants to reconnect with his friends and family, including his older sibling, aunt, and cousins, from whom he has grown distant. Having a phone would not just bridge the gap between him and his friends; it would also help him feel more connected to those he has lost touch with. He sees a phone as more than just a device—it's a gateway to engaging in the typical teenage activities he dreams of experiencing. He hopes to get a Best Buy gift card so he can pick out the right cellphone to finally have the opportunity to participate in these essential connections that so many of his peers enjoy.
