This jacket is essential for him to stay warm and avoid getting sick while commuting to work and college as he pursues his career. Due to moving frequently throughout his life, Jose doesn't have many clothes or jackets, as some have been left behind or stolen during his transitions. He wants to be able to call this jacket his own for the winter season.
